How Dirtlocker Scoring Works

Overview
A player scores one point for each post from a sports blog or sporting news source that contains their full name.

Scores are posted every hour, on the hour between 8am and 8pm (EST). 7 days a week.
Dirtlocker uses a wide variety of sports and news sources to track player scoring and publicity. See the full list

By awarding one point for each time a post contains the player's name the scoring will mimick current publicity. Events which trigger more coverage in the blogs will mean higher points for that player.

Check out this step by step walkthrough of how scoring works. This quick tutorial will help you understand how scoring works, and therefore improve your chances of drafting a great team and winning your league!

Join a League and help decide which scoring sources to use.
After you join a league you and the other team managers in your league can help decide which blogs and sources you want to use for scoring. Perhaps you like the sports humor sites like Sports Pickle, With Leather, or Kissing Suzy Kolber. Maybe you like 'legit' sources like ESPN, USA Today, or The New York Times. There are even sources with a great mix of all of these, like The Big Lead, AOL Fanhouse, or Deadspin. (full list)

The league commissioner has the ability to change which sources will be used - during the preseason. After the season begins you cannot change the sources. We recommend starting a conversation in the league discussion board about which sources to use. Even if you never change your sources - Dirtlocker has started your league off with a great set of default blogs.

Help choose the Maximum Point cap per day.
You can also help set a per day maximum point cap. The cap is applied to each player, each day. For instance - if your max cap is set at 8 points and Mike Vick gets posted about 13 times -- he will only get the first 8 points that day. The next day he is eligible to score again.

The max point cap helps curb players who are constantly in the news and helps even the playing field. We recommend you set your max cap at 80% of the number of sources you are using. For example, a league using 10 scoring sources should set the cap at 8 points. This can also be changed by the commissioner during the preseason. Once the season starts the cap is set.

Once your season begins - the points start rolling in!
Points will be logged each hour from 8am to 8pm Eastern Time each day during your season. Here are some things to consider while you check out the happenings each day.

The Player's full name must be in the title or the body of the post
Dirtlocker uses the player's full name for scoring. Nicknames and first names are not unique enough to allow for accurate scoring. Some common mispellings have been added, but purposely mispelled names will not be scored (like Colin Cowturd)

Dirtlocker uses the blog's RSS feed for scoring.
In order to enable timely and accurate scoring we use the RSS feeds of the scoring blogs. The RSS feed is a syndicated view of new posts on the blog. Some blogs use full feeds while others use partial feeds. Partial feeds often contain enough information to be accurately scored - however you may find a player's name mention on their site that is not in the feed. It's your choice as to which blogs to use for scoring - so you can choose whether or not to use partial feeds. You can get a good idea for what kind of feed the source uses by browsing around and reading some of their past scoring posts.

Delayed Scores
Players who share a name with another player may be flagged and therefore delayed. Some examples are Adam Jones, Chris Young, and Luis Castillo. Scores for these players will be tallied the same day, but you may find they are slightly delayed. This is to ensure accurate scoring for these players.
