Cincinnati Bengals Face Tough Decision: Cut Willie Anderson or Keep Him?

There was a stretch of a few years when Willie Anderson was the best right tackle in football. Anderson, who has played his entire 12-year career with the Bengals, was a good pass blocker and a dominant run blocker.

But Anderson is coming off an injury-plagued 2007, and he'll be 33 before the 2008 season starts. And Len Pasquarelli of ESPN reports (In$ider) that he's due a $2 million roster bonus on Jan. 15, plus a base salary of $3.15 million in 2008.

Anderson simply isn't worth $5.15 million for one season anymore. That's why the Bengals ought to try to renegotiate with Anderson and convince him to forgo the roster bonus and take a deal that gives him less money up front but the potential to make it back with playing time incentives.

If Anderson isn't willing to do that, the Bengals need to turn their attention to Stacy Andrews, who started 14 games this season, including several at right tackle when Anderson was out. Andrews becomes an unrestricted free agent in March, and if the Bengals are going to pay $5 million a year to keep a lineman, it should be the 26-year-old Andrews.

Barring a restructuring of Anderson's contract, the Bengals need to make the difficult decision to cut one of the best linemen they've ever had.Permal...
