But today on ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown -- the show where Johnson now works as an analyst -- it was reported that the Buccaneers called Johnson last month to ask whether he'd be interested in coming out of retirement and joining the team for its playoff run. The team felt that it needed another receiver who could contribute right away when Maurice Stovall was placed on injured reserve, and Johnson would have been a perfect fit because he already knows Gruden's system.
For his part, Johnson said, "I'm not going anywhere." But just because he's not going to Tampa Bay this year doesn't mean he's not going to leave ESPN and get back into the NFL.
With Bill Parcells now running the Dolphins, it's highly likely that Johnson and Parcells will reunite. Johnson could join the Dolphins as a player, as an assistant coach or in some type of front office capacity.
