While the biggest recent news out of Braves pre-pre-camp has been the bagging of Jamie Mark Kotsay, there are plenty of other morsels to chew on. Let's tie on a bib and dig in. Braves appetit.

The Richmond Purge

For as long as I've been alive (plus a few more years), the Braves' AAA affiliate has been in Richmond, Virginia. The ‘R-Braves' have been in existence and in the Atlanta organization for over forty years; there's something to be said for that kind of longevity and consistency.

Apparently, that something is, ‘Take a hike.

After battling in recent years with the city of Richmond over financing, stadium upgrades, and budget issues, the Braves are moving their AAA team to Gwinnett County, Georgia in 2009, a mere thirty-minute drive from Hank Aaron Drive and the Ted. Plenty is being said about the move — particularly by the residents of Richmond and Gwinnett Co., with understandably differing ‘enthusiasms' — so I'll offer just a couple of obvious advantages to the move:

  • Bobby Cox will be able to scout the minor leaguers a lot easier — like with a periscope installed in the roof of his house.
  • When the Braves and the… — the what, ‘GC-Braves'? ‘Gwinn-Braves? Erk. — are playing simultaneously, Atlanta-area residents will have two stadiums' worth of seats not to fill at once. Efficient.
  • Think of the fortune Martin Prado will save in gas and apartment money when he's bounced back and forth between the bigs and AAA all season.
