We begin to find out today just how much impact Andy Pettitte's situation, his admission of HGH usage and Congressional testimony against Roger Clemens, will affect the New York Yankees. Pettitte reports to Spring Training today, and the questions about steroids, HGH, Clemens, Brian McNamee, The Mitchell Report, Pettitte's father, etc., will be the focus of the day. Likely they will be the focus of many days to come, and quite possibly Pettitte's entire season. At best, Pettitte will deal with the questions as well as he can, will rely on his 164 career Yankee victories, and his playoff and World Series heroics to bring him goodwill from fans in the Bronx, will put aside the issues and be able to pitch like he did last year, when he won 15 games. At worst, this will blow apart what is left of Pettitte's career and sabotage the entire Yankee season. It is entirely possible that Pettitte will not be able to block it out and that the Yankees won't be able to depend on him. It is entirely possible the fans will turn on Pettitte, who obviously isn't what we all thought he was. It is entirely possible the Clemens vs. Pettitte nature of what has been said will tear apart the Yankee clubhouse.
