Birdies and bogeys from the week in golf:

Birdie: Phil Mickelson. Even though Tiger Woods wasn't in the field, it was important that Mickelson won the Northern Trust Open Sunday. It will give him some confidence that his game is on the right track. Hopefully it will set him up to make a run at Woods at Augusta.

Birdie: Annika Sorenstam. It took a long time, but Sorenstam finally got win No. 70 in the LPGA season-opener in Hawaii. That was big too. After going winless last year, it shows that Sorenstam at age 37 still has some golf left in her.

Birdie: Jeff Quinney. We're handing out lots of birdies this week. Quinney earns one for hanging tough with Mickelson. Looks like he will be an exciting young player to watch.

Birdie: Luke Donald. Hey, we haven't mentioned his name in a long time, but Our Luke finally popped up on the leaderboard, finishing in a tie for third.

Birdie: Mark Wilson. The Elmhurst resident placed T-11.

Bogey: Steve Lowery. The victory at Pebble Beach must have taken a lot out of him, because he missed the cut.

Bogey: Jim Furyk. Also missed the cut.

Birdie: John Daly. Normally finishing a tie for 75th wouldn't warrant a birdie, but when you're John Daly, you'll take what you can get these days. It was only the second time he made the cut this year.

Birdie: Scott Hoch. He's very happy about turning 50. He won his second in a row on the Champions Tour.
