MLB.com's Ken Gurnick begins his latest Dodgers spring training piece with this sentence:
They will try to transfer the charm and nostalgia of Dodgertown to their new Arizona training complex, but one thing the Dodgers can't do is make Sandy Koufax appear out of thin air as he's done the past two days here.
Appear out of thin air? Holy crap. Apparently no one has seen Sandy Koufax enter Dodgertown the last two days. He has just simply appeared there. No car or bus or flying carpet seems to have been used. He's just simply appeared. Dodger magic never dies.
However Koufax was able to get himself to Dodgertown, once he was there he began working with Chan Ho Park and Scott Proctor.
'I was drafted by this organization and we were always told about following in the footsteps of Koufax, [Don] Drysdale, [Orel] Hershiser,' said Proctor. It still remains unclear if Koufax, Drysdale, or Hershiser ever made a bonfire in the clubhouse, but I guess completely following in someone's footsteps is a little too boring for Proctor.
On Monday, Proctor and Koufax discussed balance and keeping his weight back while engaged with the rubber. Unfortunately, Proctor didn't ask how Koufax had arrived at Dodgertown. 'Hard work,' I bet he would say.
'We worked on a lot of mechanical things and thought process and changed a couple of grips,' said Proctor. 'Of course, not everybody has hands the size of palm fronds like he does. But just to pick his brain is an honor.'
Wait a minute, what the heck are palm fronds?
Oh.
Most people would have probably said tennis racquets, but that Scott Proctor sure is an original.
In other Dodger news, Andruw Jones, Nomar Garciaparra, James Loney, Juan Pierre and Mark Sweeney all arrived at Dodgertown via conventional modes of transportation.
