Devil Rays versus Pirates in World Series?

Thanks to our friends over at WhatIfSports, you can simulate games for just about any match up you can think of. Want to see the 2007 Red Sox play the 2004 Red Sox? You can do it. For that matter, you can have the 2007 Red Sox play the 1887 Boston Bean Eaters. They have a ton of data going back to the beginnings of baseball. It's a lot of fun and I could spend hours doing it.

Where else could you see the Tampa Bay Devil Rays play the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 2007 World Series? I know… that's messed up, but I thought it would be fun. Regardless, it seemed interesting, so I simulated the games.

The Pirates took game one 15-7. I don't know where they found the offense, especially against Kazmir, but they did. Jack Wilson was player of the game with 3 hits and 4 RBI. Game 2 saw the Devil Rays tie it up with a gutsy 6-5 win. Brendan Harris had 3 RBI, but Akanori Iwamura was player of the game with 4 hits. Tampa didn't let up in game 3, winning 10-3 over Pat Maholm. Jackson pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up 1 earned run for the win. Player of the game was Delmon Young who went 3-5 with 3 RBI and didn't throw a bat at an umpire. (A nice simulation for Young unlike the following Real highlight).

Pittsburgh evened up the series at 2 games a piece with a 10-6 drubbing of Sonnanstine. Chacon got the win in relief, Capps notched the save. Jose Bautista was Player of the game with 3 hits. Tampa Bay took a commanding 3-2 series lead when Howell took on Morris in a battle of the number five starters. Carlos Pena was the stud in the 14-12 win with 2 home runs and 6 RBI.

Surely Garzelanny wouldn't beat Kazmir again in game 6, and the Devil Rays would be champions of the world and get to keep Devil in...
