When the Tigers made no moves by the trading deadline last year, I knew their sights were set on major acquisitions in 2008. The major holes in the lineup were an offensive third baseman, left fielder, and more dept in the bullpen. I figured they might make a run at A-Rod from the New York Yankees. I never realized the Tigers would make such a drastic change on their roster. The Ace pitcher of the Florida Marlins will join an already strong rotation. Miguel Cabrera who batted at an average of .320 and hit 34 homeruns will join a lineup that posted one of the highest scoring offenses in the majors. Suddenly the one weakness in the lineup is one of the strongest. Coach Leyland said he hadn't really thought about the batting lineup yet, but Cabrera will hit in the "4, 5, or 6th spot". If Cabrera hit .320 on a struggling Florida Marlins team, what will his average be with Ordonez and Sheffield backing him up? Pitchers will not be able to pitch around him. This lineup now equals Boston and New York. DETROIT 1. Edgar Renteria SS .332 – HR 12 – RBI 57 = 08:$9M 2. Placido Polanco 2B .341 – HR 9 – RBI 67 = 08:$4.6M 3. Curtis Granderson CF .302 – HR 23 – RBI 74 = 08:$410T 4. Miguel Cabrera 3B .320 – HR 34 – RBI 119 = 08:$7.4M 5. Magglio Ordonez RF .363 – HR 28 – RBI 139 = 08:$15M 6. Gary Sheffield DH .265 – HR 25 – RBI 75 = 08:$14M 7. Carlos Guillen 1B .296 – HR 21 – RBI 102 = 08:$12M 8. Ivan Rodriguez C .281 – HR 11 – RBI 63 = 08:$13M 9.
